Born in Toulon, freelance illustrator and textile designer Mathilde Roussillat Sicsic now lives and works in Paris. She graduated from ESAA Duperré in Paris in 2014 with a degree in Textile, Colour and Material Design Studies. Mathilde’s multi-disciplinary approach to her work has helped her develop a range of skills in textiles and materials, printing techniques, the creation of patterns for printing, weaving and embroidery, elaboration of trends, drawing, and set design. These are all tools that she also shares with students as part of her role as a lecturer and workshop leader at fashion schools.
As a freelancer Mathilde has worked across a variety of disciplines and with an exciting array of clients. Using her skills as an illustrator, graphic designer, colour and material designer, she has worked for companies in the fashion industry including Maison Margiela, Nina Ricci and Marc Jacobs. Mathilde has created textiles for Hermès, worked with the trend offices at Nelly Rodi and Carlin, as well as working on furniture design, projects in the motor industry, set design for shop windows, and for cinema and advertising.
“My inspirations come from what surrounds me; other creatives in various fields of design such as wood, ceramics, graphics and typography design. Of course fashion and all the prints created for the collections, being a textile designer myself. And I love looking at people!”
The depiction of vegetation and botanical matter is a common feature in her work; “this is undoubtedly a professional distortion: as a textile designer, floral and plant patterns are a big part of the work“. At home, she is surrounded by plants, and the camouflage effect they create also seeps into her designs.
Mathilde works across a variety of media including ink and watercolour, painting and digital drawing. Her artworks often begin with a sketch on paper, where she experiments with shapes, postures and rhythms before thinking about the colourful atmosphere she wishes to create. Mathilde explains; “The graphical rhythm is essential to the dynamic in my drawings, something I follow by instinct, like magnetism, creating ripples like on a water surface. I find this kind of whispering shapes hypnotic“.
Mathilde has participated in collective exhibitions and workshop projects including: Fashion Factory – Center G. Pompidou (2011), En Mode Béton – Maison de l’Architecture (2014); a diploma project exhibited at the Carreau du Temple (2014); a wood workshop during Design Week – Cité de la Mode et du Design (2014); Outlines exhibition – Ateliers de Paris (2015); and Artistic direction of the clip for the song Nuit by Gisèle Pape (2015).
Going forward, Mathilde is looking forward to working on more prints for fashion brands, and will be participating in an exhibition in Paris this November entitled Les Nouveaux collectionneurs / The New collectors, which aims to support creation. Always working on commissions, be that portraits, wedding or birth announcements, Mathilde has ideas for a children’s book and the design of wine labels.
