LHR Exhibitions is a creative platform founded by Hackney based illustrator and designer Mr Gresty. Starting back in October 2013, they are now holding their 11th exhibition – the most recent centered on a simple two colour brief. For 2 Colour the artists were “invited to create a piece within their unique style to a 50×70 format with the limited colour palette of red and black (plus the white of the page)”. We caught up with Gresty to find out a little more.
What inspired you to start LHR and curate the exhibitions?
I’ve been designing and illustrating for a long time now and I get to meet lots of talented people. I wanted to get my own work seen and help others get noticed too. This obviously isn’t a new idea, but with galleries taking 40%-50% commission, I wanted the artists to be able to walk away with the whole 100%.
The venues are bars, which means the exhibitions stay up longer, the launch party lasts longer and anybody can turn up any day, within opening hours and they don’t have to pay to see the great work.
How do you decide on a theme for each exhibition?
Sometimes I am inspired by something that I’ve seen; often I have ideas after many pints of beer. I like the exhibitions to include illustration, print, photography, collage, and painting
so by keeping the brief as simple as possible the artist can create a piece within their own unique style.

The next exhibition is called Lets Tessellate, the focus being to challenge the rules of regular tessellation, of symmetry, and regularity. As a regular tessellation is highly symmetric, edge-to-edge tiling made up of regular polygons, all of the same shape. But rules are made to be broken!
