When Mindy Schumacher studied Philosophy of Art in graduate school, she hadn’t anticipated working as an artist later on. That happened quite by chance. Her practice in textile printing began with several sparks over the years but caught fire when she became a mother. Desiring to adapt to a minimalist lifestyle and crafting her surroundings by hand, she was drawn to the slow and thoughtful, and often antiquated processes. Much of her designs are for handmade clothing, accessories and decor.
Having dabbled in reduction linocut printing in college, she sought a way to cross-pollinate some of her varied interests, namely, printmaking, pattern making and graphic design, into a handmade practice. That led to seeking out others who were block printing for fabrics and she soon fell into a supportive community of artisans.
In 2017, a rabbit hole opened up during a long period of convalescence into an exploration of hand pulling art prints and delving into finer detail and carving technique. She found great comfort in the creative process and encouragement being invited to an international print exchange with her first ever signed and editioned prints. As an autodidact, those early experiences and successes were vital.
Mindy creates thoughtful, eclectic and nostalgic designs focusing on contrast, gradient, texture and incorporating the narrative nature of pattern. Her recent print work subjects range from dead musicians and thinkers to trees and botanical illustrations all in the form of beautiful linocuts.
