A story we’re excited to cover this week is the debut of the UK’s 1st Basketball Art Court transformed by Brighton based Artist Lois O’Hara. O’Hara has partnered with US-based organisation Project Backboard and Basketball England for the project, turning a run-down, public basketball court into a unique work of art aimed at spreading positivity.
Located in Saunders Park, Brighton, the court will be the first of its kind in the UK and has been designed to bring the previously derelict space back to life and uplift the surrounding community. O’Hara’s colourful aesthetic will be the main feature of the space, creating a bright and bold concoction of abstract shapes and fluid lines centred around the slogan ‘JOY’, capturing O’Hara’s playful essence.
“I’m interested in capturing the fluidity of an image in motion,” says Lois, “this sense of movement combined with my love of colour is how others recognise my practice.” This will be O’Hara’s biggest canvas to date.
To help fund the project, O’Hara has collaborated with Venice Vall to create custom basketballs. The limited-edition balls will be sent to all funders contributing £40 or more to the project >> Check it out here.
