Crack Planet, a new Danish skateboard brand, have collaborated with print studio Ice Screen Printing to hand-print their designs on skateboard decks in an old school way. “For us at Ice Screen Printing, it was a new and exciting challenge, and luckily the guys behind Crack Planet were up for an experiment with putting our skills on the wheels!” states Rune of the print studio.
Screen printing on skateboards was new to the team at Ice Screen Printing, and involved building a custom setup including a specially designed palette for the boards and a curved squeegee. Rune explains; “It was a test, not only with new tools but also with the technique and colours… One of the challenges was the decks being uneven and curved, making it a tricky surface to print on“. Thus, the team had to loosen the tension on the screens’ mesh and create a squeegee that could bend in line with the boards.
By playing with the technique and different ink types, the print team helped create limited editions, with unlimited possibilities. “And for us, that is what the handcraft of screen printing is all about” says Rune. On the customised skateboards, they tried out different types of ink, including special effect glow-in-the-dark, glitter, light-reflective pigment, and UV.
Rune concludes; “The process wasn’t easy and had some uncertainties concerning the final result. It took some practice to get the desired precision. But we kept it ice cool – and in the end, it was worth it. We hope you like the result as much as we do“.
