SUMMARY:Paint! Pattern! Print!

SUMMARY:Sarah Gillespie: Birded and Eyed
DESCRIPTION:Kestle Barton presents a second solo exhibition by Sarah Gillespie\, bringing together new works in mezzotint and drawing. The exhibition takes its title from a line by the American poet Jane Hirshfield\, reflecting Gillespie’s ongoing attention to the animate\, watchful presence of the\nnatural world. \nDeveloped through sustained observation of the woods\, meadows and night-life around both Kestle Barton and the artist’s home in Devon\, these works continue Gillespie’s distinctive exploration of moths and other small\, often overlooked\, inhabitants of these environments. Her practice is rooted in close looking — an attentiveness to fragility\, pattern and transformation — where the act of drawing becomes a way of registering both physical detail and a more elusive sense of encounter. \nWorking primarily in mezzotint\, a printmaking process known for its depth of tone and capacity for subtle gradation\, Gillespie brings a particular intensity to her subjects. Moths emerge from dark grounds\, their wings and markings rendered with precision yet retaining a sense of movement and impermanence. Alongside these prints\, drawings extend this enquiry\, tracing the forms and rhythms of the surrounding landscape. All mezzotints in the exhibition will be available. A group of ‘spent’ copper etching plates from the artist’s studio will also be on display\, offering further insight into the printing process and existing as objects of quiet material presence in their own right. Four large Garden Tiger drawings\, commissioned by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery\, Exeter (2025)\, are included in the exhibition.\nAs with her previous exhibition at Kestle Barton in 2020\, Gillespie’s work is closely connected to the specific ecology of the place. The gallery\, set within a former farmstead and surrounded by cultivated gardens and wild margins\, provides a context in which these images resonate — not as isolated studies but as part of a wider\, living environment. The exhibition invites a slower mode of looking\, attuned to cycles of light and darkness\, presence and disappearance. \nAlongside Hirshfield’s words\, the exhibition is informed by a line from Heraclitus — ‘nature likes to be hid’. Gillespie’s sustained engagement with camouflage and patterning reflects both the evolutionary intelligence of her subjects and the difficulty of fully apprehending them. These works suggest a world in which what is most vital often remains partially concealed\, held in a state of quiet resistance to being seen. \nIn bringing these works together\, Birded and Eyed reflects on the idea of being both observer and observed — a shifting relationship between human and non-human worlds\, held in a state of quiet attention. \nModern Toss – Having an exhibition yeah was last modified: August 19th\, 2026 by

SUMMARY:Dafi Kühne: Constructing Posters
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, a structurally simple analog printing method\, the letterpress technique invented by Gutenberg in the 15th century\, is regaining popularity with makers and artisans as a way to counteract the digital world in an age of booming digital and AI technologies. In Japan and Western countries in particular\, large numbers of printing presses are still in operation. Although most of them are small-scale\, it seems that many people are still inspired by letterpress printing.\nEven so\, the Swiss artist Dafi Kühne is probably the only one in the world who specializes in using letterpress printing to make large-format posters\, including the 89.5 x 128 cm format\, which is specific to Switzerland\, or the 70 x 100 cm format\, which is similar to the Japanese B1 size. Both a graphic designer and a letterpress printer\, Kühne keeps approximately 40 tons of printing presses\, movable type\, and other equipment in his workshop in the foothills of the Swiss Alps. This is where he creates his posters through a complex\, labor-intensive process that involves using both his hands and his body to operate the equipment. Kühne uses metal type\, wood type\, hand-made linocuts\, and other traditional materials and techniques. From time to time\, he even casts metal type and constructs original printing blocks by integrating and developing new ideas. He also pays close attention to the process of fixing the image on paper. Not content to confine himself to using existing tools as-is\, he builds his own dedicated tools and modifies printing presses by combining modern equipment with traditional ones to hand-print posters one at a time.\nIn short\, Dafi Kühne is not merely a graphic designer\, but an artisan who designs the entire printing process\, transforming the initial design into finished printed matter. Entitled Constructing Posters\, this exhibition closely traces Kühne’s approach to design by showing not only the finished posters\, but also the physical evidence of a production process that is essentially hand-built. The emerging space will be filled with the forgotten sensations of smell and touch\, weight and lightness. Looking at Kühne’s approach to creating work\, visitors will be able to experience the infinite potential of expression created by the human hand.\n\n\n\n\nVenue\nginza graphic gallery （ggg）\nDNP Ginza Bldg. 1F/B1F\, 7-7-2 Ginza\, Chuo-ku\, Tokyo 104-0061\ntel 03-3571-5206   fax 03-3289-1389 \nJuly 14 – August 26\, 2026\nOpen hours: 11:00am – 7:00pm\nClosed on Sundays and holidays\nAdmission free \n\n\nSupport\nSupported by Embassy of Switzerland in Japan\nWith generous support from Stiftung Anne-Marie Schindler \n\n\nGallery Talk\n4:00－5:30pm\, July 14\, 2026\nDNP Ginza Bldg. 3F\nSpeaker: Dafi Kühne\n*Booking starts on Monday\, June 29 on this site \n\n\nOpening Party\n5:30－7:00pm\, July 14\, 2026\nDNP Ginza Bldg. 2F\n*Dafi’s posters will be on sale at the opening \n\n\nPublication\nggg Books 145 – Dafi Kühne\nPublished by DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion on July 14\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\nModern Toss – Having an exhibition yeah was last modified: August 19th\, 2026 by

SUMMARY:Hot Printing. Offenbach Print Festival\, 22 and 23 August 2026
DESCRIPTION:It’s set to be a colourful and diverse weekend once again: For the third time\, the Hot Printing festival in Offenbach will bring together over 90 artists and collectives who explore the theme of printing in a wide variety of ways. A young and dynamic scene will showcase their printed works – from screen-printed posters to traditional letterpress\, experimental lithography and material printing\, right through to comics and zines in vibrant colours produced on a Risograph printer!\nYou can look forward to stalls\, workshops\, readings\, talks\, exhibitions\, music\, a bar\, good food and inspiring discussions. Find the full festival programme at www.klingspormuseum.de – entry is free! \nPrinting plays a major role in Offenbach’s history: Lithography was first used commercially in Offenbach for printing sheet music at the end of the 18th century\, laying the foundations for the printing of posters and illustrations\, which is now ubiquitous. The Klingspor Museum collects modern and contemporary printed works\, and small print workshops and initiatives have been setting up in the city over the past few years. Printing is simply part of Offenbach’s identity\, and exhibitors from the surrounding area are now looking forward to welcoming a diverse range of visitors\, alongside print enthusiasts from Leipzig\, Hamburg\, Berlin\, Vienna\, Zurich and the Netherlands! \nAs well as browsing and shopping\, you can of course try your hand at printing here too: The hands-on programme includes postcard printing on the Boston platen press in the print workshop\, Lego printing and kitchen lithography\, a sock-printing station using screen printing\, cyanotype and water lithography\, as well as a host of talks\, demonstrations and readings. The workshops are aimed at print enthusiasts of all ages\, whether you’re an experienced printer or a keen amateur – there’s something for everyone! \nModern Toss – Having an exhibition yeah was last modified: August 19th\, 2026 by
