DESCRIPTION:Tannery Arts studio holders Modern Toss bring their 21st anniversary exhibition\, Having an Exhibition Yeah?\, to London this summer\, a full-scale show presenting over two decades of their cartoon excellence. \nRunning from 14 August to 6 September 2026\, their exhibition gathers some of Modern Toss’ best known artwork alongside brand-new pieces. \nTheir show features over 100 Modern Toss artworks\, including token-operated swearing machines\, big stone heads\, large-scale paintings\, a wind-powered finger mill sculpture and a new 5m-wide ceiling mobile with four life-sized flies hanging off it. During the exhibition\, a looped set of 100 best cartoons will be screened alongside a retrospective of animation and real life action from the Modern Toss collection. \nJon Link will host portrait sessions in their infamous Portrait Booth. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n2.5 hrs workshop\nMaterials and light refreshments provided\n£40 plus booking fee\n\n  \nIn this group workshop you will learn how to create artwork for risograph printing\, supported by an experienced artist riso print practitioner. The workshop is open to people with no prior experience of Riso\, or people seeking a refresher. Riso is a unique form of printing that has similarities with both photocopying and screen printing. It uses a machine called a Risograph to make beautiful\, layered images and graphics\, using digital files and images. \nWe’ll begin by exploring how the risograph printer works and looking at artworks and publications previously made using the machine. Each person will then develop their own two-layered design using a mixture of drawing and collage. We’ll finish with each person printing 10 copies of their design to create 10 x two-colour A3 or A4 prints to take home. \nPeople completing the Riso Introduction workshop will be able to book an Open Access slot at the TACO! print studio to independently continue the development of their learning or projects. \nWhat to bring and what is included \n\nAll materials are provided in the workshop.\nPlease bring some ideas\, printed images and text that you might want to use in your print.\nLight refreshments are included and the Print Studio has a kitchen with microwave\, kettle and toaster for preparing your own food should you need to.\n\nAbout the lead workshop artists \nChloe Cooper is an artist and educator living in Thamesmead. SUMMARY:Dafi Kühne: Constructing Posters
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, a structurally simple analog printing method\, the letterpress technique invented by Gutenberg in the 15th century\, is regaining popularity with makers and artisans as a way to counteract the digital world in an age of booming digital and AI technologies. In Japan and Western countries in particular\, large numbers of printing presses are still in operation. Although most of them are small-scale\, it seems that many people are still inspired by letterpress printing.\nEven so\, the Swiss artist Dafi Kühne is probably the only one in the world who specializes in using letterpress printing to make large-format posters\, including the 89.5 x 128 cm format\, which is specific to Switzerland\, or the 70 x 100 cm format\, which is similar to the Japanese B1 size. Both a graphic designer and a letterpress printer\, Kühne keeps approximately 40 tons of printing presses\, movable type\, and other equipment in his workshop in the foothills of the Swiss Alps. This is where he creates his posters through a complex\, labor-intensive process that involves using both his hands and his body to operate the equipment. Kühne uses metal type\, wood type\, hand-made linocuts\, and other traditional materials and techniques. From time to time\, he even casts metal type and constructs original printing blocks by integrating and developing new ideas. He also pays close attention to the process of fixing the image on paper. Not content to confine himself to using existing tools as-is\, he builds his own dedicated tools and modifies printing presses by combining modern equipment with traditional ones to hand-print posters one at a time.\nIn short\, Dafi Kühne is not merely a graphic designer\, but an artisan who designs the entire printing process\, transforming the initial design into finished printed matter. Entitled Constructing Posters\, this exhibition closely traces Kühne’s approach to design by showing not only the finished posters\, but also the physical evidence of a production process that is essentially hand-built. The emerging space will be filled with the forgotten sensations of smell and touch\, weight and lightness. DESCRIPTION:Emakimono (picture scroll) is a book in its most elementary form\, consisting of a number of sheets of paper joined in sequence\, attached to a pine dowel at one end and with a cloth-bound outer cover. Traditionally used for Buddhist sutras and picture books\, this technique has the potential to be applied to contemporary book arts projects today. \nDay one will focus on the scroll itself\, a beautiful combination of washi (kozo\, mitsumata\, gampi)\, nori (rice paste – conservational glue substitute)\, and cloth. You will be learning a traditional backing technique – URAUCHI. This technique makes artwork sturdier and can be used to create a bookcloth. \nDay two will be dedicated to creating a modern version of a custom scroll box. You will use beautiful decorative Japanese papers – including Katazome sheets from Awagami paper mill and sumingashi (traditional eco Japanese marbling technique) washi – to create a wrap around Jikumono-bako that will store your made emakimono\, which will be wrapped in silk ribbon and secured with bone clasps. \nThe materials used for both the scroll and the box are all sourced from Japan and the UK. SUMMARY:Sarah Gillespie: Birded and Eyed
DESCRIPTION:Kestle Barton presents a second solo exhibition by Sarah Gillespie\, bringing together new works in mezzotint and drawing. The exhibition takes its title from a line by the American poet Jane Hirshfield\, reflecting Gillespie’s ongoing attention to the animate\, watchful presence of the\nnatural world. \nDeveloped through sustained observation of the woods\, meadows and night-life around both Kestle Barton and the artist’s home in Devon\, these works continue Gillespie’s distinctive exploration of moths and other small\, often overlooked\, inhabitants of these environments. Her practice is rooted in close looking — an attentiveness to fragility\, pattern and transformation — where the act of drawing becomes a way of registering both physical detail and a more elusive sense of encounter. \nWorking primarily in mezzotint\, a printmaking process known for its depth of tone and capacity for subtle gradation\, Gillespie brings a particular intensity to her subjects. Moths emerge from dark grounds\, their wings and markings rendered with precision yet retaining a sense of movement and impermanence. Alongside these prints\, drawings extend this enquiry\, tracing the forms and rhythms of the surrounding landscape. All mezzotints in the exhibition will be available. A group of ‘spent’ copper etching plates from the artist’s studio will also be on display\, offering further insight into the printing process and existing as objects of quiet material presence in their own right. Four large Garden Tiger drawings\, commissioned by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery\, Exeter (2025)\, are included in the exhibition.\nAs with her previous exhibition at Kestle Barton in 2020\, Gillespie’s work is closely connected to the specific ecology of the place. The gallery\, set within a former farmstead and surrounded by cultivated gardens and wild margins\, provides a context in which these images resonate — not as isolated studies but as part of a wider\, living environment. Gillespie’s sustained engagement with camouflage and patterning reflects both the evolutionary intelligence of her subjects and the difficulty of fully apprehending them. DESCRIPTION:We work hard for living. Daydreaming becomes an oasis\, a way to settle our emotions and envisage the future. The toys collections that witness our stories and guard our spirits help us retain a sense of self in the labyrinthine realm. \nA cabinet of curiosities is a theatre of wonders\, an inventory of the rare and the strange. This exhibition reimagines this cabinet not as an encyclopedic for specimen\, but as a chamber of care. Drawing inspiration from toys\, this project use prints\, objects and game design to reconstruct the memory fragments of daily life and the imaginary world. Preserving new narratives of abandoned things\, the sense of belonging and individuality will be explored through the journey. Expressing our longing for a fulfilling life\, resulting in seeking the true essence of “home” that resides. \nWen Ching Yiu Krystine (b.2000) is a Hong Kong-based visual artist and graphic designer whose work blends printmaking\, illustration\, and experimental graphic design.
