SUMMARY:Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print
DESCRIPTION:Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print explores the history and development of Japanese woodblock printing\, revealing its origins and techniques alongside the influence of nature\, society and cultural change on this art form. \nThis major exhibition covers over 300 years of printing history from 17th to 21st centuries and features over 100 striking and iconic works by world-renowned artists including Katsushika Hokusai\, Utagawa Hiroshige and Kitagawa Utamaro\, amongst many others. \nJapanese woodblock prints from York Art Gallery’s extensive collection\, some on display for the first time\, sit alongside incredible loans from regional and national institutions including early printed books from the British Library\, stunning kimonos from Durham Oriental Museum\, armour and swords from the Royal Armouries\, and a mesmerising selection of prints from the British Museum\, Ashmolean Museum and Maidstone Museum\, including Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa\, one of the most recognisable and celebrated artworks in the world. \nThis fantastic group of artworks\, armour\, costume and printed materials presents a visually impressive display and brings the colourful world of Japanese prints to life. \nThe exhibition extends into the York Museum Gardens\, with an addition of a Japanese-dry landscape garden\, or ‘karesansui’\, directly behind the Gallery that has been created in response to the exhibition. SUMMARY:A Chamber of Wonders
DESCRIPTION:We work hard for living. Daydreaming becomes an oasis\, a way to settle our emotions and envisage the future. The toys collections that witness our stories and guard our spirits help us retain a sense of self in the labyrinthine realm. \nA cabinet of curiosities is a theatre of wonders\, an inventory of the rare and the strange. This exhibition reimagines this cabinet not as an encyclopedic for specimen\, but as a chamber of care. Drawing inspiration from toys\, this project use prints\, objects and game design to reconstruct the memory fragments of daily life and the imaginary world. Preserving new narratives of abandoned things\, the sense of belonging and individuality will be explored through the journey. Expressing our longing for a fulfilling life\, resulting in seeking the true essence of “home” that resides. \nWen Ching Yiu Krystine (b.2000) is a Hong Kong-based visual artist and graphic designer whose work blends printmaking\, illustration\, and experimental graphic design. Drawing inspiration from personal memories\, she explores the beauty of imperfection through risograph\, screen printing\, and graphic media. \nWen’s art challenges traditional aesthetics with playful textures and emotionally resonant compositions that feel both nostalgic and fresh. \nA Chamber of Wonders was last modified:  July 24th\, 2026 by
