Born out of a deep love for nature, Counter-Print‘s latest project is Touch Wood. Imagined and curated by Thomas Danthony and Clare Mabin, Touch Wood showcases a community of artists, designers and illustrators who have been asked to express what nature means to them by contributing an original piece of art created on a wooden board. The project comes together in the form of a book and exhibition of the same name.
The artworks from the exhibition which have been reproduced within the book, have come from all around the world and are an invitation to, ‘contemplate, reflect, create, refuel, touch and dream’. All of the artworks have been made by hand and each one is entirely unique. “Each artist has taken a personal approach, focusing on physicality and preserving the rawness of chosen materials, or expressing elements of nature figuratively or abstractly. Some of the pieces are playful, others poetic, a few dramatic. Referring back to the meaning of the expression ‘touch wood’, they may be perceived as lucky charms” explains Sarah Boris, the book’s designers in the publication’s introduction. All of the contributors hope that even this small gesture, in the form of art, will help to safeguard nature.Contributing artists include: Giacomo Bagnara, Matteo Berton, Paul Blow, Sarah Boris, Bill Bragg, Ethan Caflisch, Laura Callaghan, Jun Cen, Stephen Cheetham, Kate Copeland, Cruschiform, Thomas Danthony, Aurore De La Morinerie, David Doran, Matt Dorfman, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Petra Eriksson, Marylou Faure, Malika Favre, Emily Forgot, Owen Gent, Geoff Grandfield, Marie Jo Guerin, Tom Haugomat, Thibaud Herem, Hey, Cody Hudson, Javier Jaen, Ricard Jorge, Jean Jullien, Bijou Karman, Yann Le Bec, Magoz, Vincent Mahe, Antoine Maillard, Bruno Mangyoku, François Maumont, Quentin Monge, Virginie Morgand, Jeff Ostberg, V O, Emiliano, Ponzi, Damien Poulain, Paige Russell, Kristin Texeira, Paul Thurlby, Charlotte Trounce, Emmanuelle Walker, Anthony Zinonos.
