Working in collaboration with Ikon Gallery, James Turner of Stirchley Print Works has produced a Limited Edition screen print to accompany their 2024 Exhibition, Start The Press, which is presented as part of their 60th anniversary year.
Designed and printed in South Birmingham by James at his studio, the silkscreen takes inspiration from the first years of Ikon Gallery’s marketing archive. James chose to pull the iconic yellow tone from a poster from the 1960’s advertisement of an exhibition of John Salt’s paintings. The black overlay is a direct nod to the windows of the School of Art & Design at the University of Wolverhampton, which is home to the large printing press that resides in Ikon’s first floor galleries for the duration of the exhibition.
The title at the base, ‘IKON 60’ is a new take on Ikon’s earliest logo and branding, celebrating the gallery’s 60th year. IKON 60 is printed with Premaset Premium inks and printed on PC100 Neenah Environment 324gsm paper in a limited edition of 60.
Start the Press! also includes a display of printmaking, featuring artworks by Lubaina Himid, David Hockney, Yinka Shonibare and Catherine Yass loaned from the Jerwood Collection.
The exhibition is on through to 21 April 2024. Open Wednesday – Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays, 11am-5pm. Ikon Gallery, 1 Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, Birmingham B1 2HS
