Hosted by Espacio Gallery, Total Boardom is a group exhibition curated by Ollie St Clair Terry in collaboration with The London Illustration Fair. Taking place from the 18th through to the 22nd September, the show features a diverse group of just under 40 artists, crafting artwork on a variety of boards (skateboards, chess boards, ironing boards, etc), roughly to the theme of ‘boredom’.
A series of creative workshops will also run alongside the exhibition, as well as a small shop front in the gallery space selling works from the artists involved.
Ollie St Clair Terry tells us more about his piece, Daydream, that will be exhibited during the show: “My artwork explores the concept of the mind drifting off during mundane tasks, like ironing. I’m using a vintage wooden ironing board as my canvas, transforming it into a vibrant explosion of colour. This piece represents how our thoughts wander into bright, imaginative spaces when we daydream.”
Melissa North’s silkscreen triptych, The Places I go In My Dreams I, II & III, is also on display as part of the show. Speaking on the work she states; “What do you dream of when you’re totally bored? For me, it’s the places I’d rather be. Whether it’s getting lost in the memories of the places I’ve been, or dreaming of new adventures, my mind has a tendency to drift away from the present. Silk-screen printing on the fly and working intuitively with no set plan, I have created three totally unique skateboard decks that capture a sense of ephemeral memory, each with a focus on a distinct location. The repetitive process of layering up photographs from my own travels with illustrations, graphic motifs and blocks of colour allowed me to reach a flow state that fuelled an excitement of lifting up the screen to reveal how the artworks underneath had evolved. Much like one experiences flashes of distant memories that overlay themselves over the present, the process of working directly on the wood, and building each deck artwork instinctively was full of flashes of inspiration that left me feeling far from totally bored.”
