Ashley Back is a motion designer currently based in London, working primarily on 2D animation, character animation, collage animation and art direction. She also works at Studio Moross. Ashley studied for a BA in fashion print at Central Saint Martins, but graduated with a degree in Motion Creative at Hyper Island after finding that she enjoyed executing her ideas within moving images rather than fabrics.
Ashley has worked at Studio Moross for 2.5 years where she has gained a broad range of experience, mainly focused on music-based clients such as Sam Smith, All Points East, Parklike and MTV. She enjoys working with music-based clients because it allows her to come up with a broad variety of styles, as most of them have strong identities.
Ashley’s imagery focuses on using various media and colours, heavily influenced by her multi-cultural background and inner personality.
“I come from South Korea, but grew up in Japan for most of my life. In Japan social structures are very uniform; mental wellbeing, sexual orientation and race are not things that are openly spoken about”.
Ashley enjoys creating moving images because they allow her to express herself without restriction. She believes it is important to talk about this in order to lead change and contribute to diversity. She usually starts by making a scrapbook of collages which include both her own sketches and imagery she finds in books. She prefers something physical rather than digital. This helps her to develop her own imagery.
Regarding future work, Ashley wants to heighten her focus on fashion-related projects, due to her fashion background. She is also planning to do more analogue-style animations such as drawing on paper, scanning and composing on a computer.
