Caen-based illustrator and graphic designer Joanna Calderwood has recently been experimenting with screen printing on clothing. Two months ago, she started drawing a series of abstract designs, with no particular project in mind. “I just let my intuition do the work,” comments the illustrator. Joanna started accumulating shapes that came to look like something organic; “like a flower growing”. A collection of black line designs emerged, which she thought would make perfect prints on tee-shirts, button-up shirts, and even on trousers!
Not wanting to buy a load of tee-shirts from amazon, for ecological and economic reasons, Joanna, instead, started gathering second hand cloths given by friends, found at her local charity shop, thrift stores, and on the market. She then screen printed her designs on her own collection of high quality cotton vintage shirts.
Nature’s shapes, colours, and patterns are the primary inspiration for Joanna’s art. Illustration is her way of expressing herself, and bright colours, details, and oneiric themes are the mane components of her graphic and artistic world.
The printed apparel will soon be available to purchase, stay tuned!
