Many creatives these days have a double. The first goes to work and does their job whilst the other, sometimes only let out at night, is allowed to explore the creatives realms of experimentation. Unbound from client briefs or guidelines of a brand. By day, new People of Print Member Danielle Wagner works at a design agency in the Chicago suburbs and by night she explores and experiments with the intersection of art and design.
Formerly Wagner is a graphic designer, illustrator and printer from Chicago. She retained her Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication from Northern Illinois University and her Bachelor of Art degree in Art/Graphic Design from Elmhurst College in 2012.
Wagner tells us her favourite aspect of design techniques always involve some sort of handmade or handcrafted element, whether that be lettering, screen printing, letterpress or collage. “The addition of a handmade element to design creates a much stronger connection to the audience,” Wagner says.
In early 2018, she began to explore letterpress with a Showcard Tabletop Press. Using purely wood and metal type in her early letterpress prints, this further evolved to incorporate screen printing within its process. Recurring themes within her work are typography explored through the art of printmaking and feminism and women’s roles in contemporary society. Much of Wagner’s inspiration is drawn from advertisements from 1940-1960 and postmodern design all created in her free time.
