The brand started life as a few badges that were made and handed out to make Mel Elliott feel better after her boyfriend dumped her. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, Mel started her design career and her little I love Mel badges became more of a brand than a badge.
Influenced by pop culture, celebrity and fame, her hand drawn colouring books and quirky stationary are her most well known projects. However, recently her work has taken a different angle, addressing the important issue of gender equality something Mel strongly believes in promoting.
The earlier we start teaching children about gender equality and feminist issues, the better. This T-shirt, with its fun, ultra-cool neon design will assist in making children see that raising such issues should not be shied away from. As parents, haven’t we had enough of pink sparkles for girls and blue dinosaurs & tractors for boys? It is 2015… I certainly have!
Aimed at 4-8 year olds, her beautifully illustrated Childrens book Pearl Power, is written in rhyme and tells the story a feisty five year old girl who strongly believes equality between boys and girls.
Her most recent venture is a screen-printed, unisex T-shirt for children, printed in neon, pink, yellow and black ink, and with the artwork FEMINIST on the front – its aim to raise awareness from an early age.
