Last February, Zé Monteiro hosted a Screen print workshop on East Street, South London. Driven by the large quantity of free plastic bags handed out at his local market – East Street Market, Zé decided to hold a tote bag printing workshop to help reduce plastic bag waste.
“Everyone has a choice whether to accept a free plastic bag. Little by little, If I make the community proud of their reusable tote bags, they just might use them and say no to this endless plastic bag wave.”
Zé’s students loved the opportunity to get hands-on with the screen printing technique. Each participant created a stencil from their own hand sketched design, and then learnt how to correctly pull a print with squeegee and screen under the expert guidance of Zé.
At the end of the workshop everyone left happy with a better understanding of the screen printing technique and its infinite possibilities, as well as their own tote bag proudly screen printed and ready to rock their responsible shopping.
