Sean Suchara is based out of a studio space in the suburbs of Long Island, New York. He graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. These days he isn’t explicitly doing Graphic Design though. A fidgety attention span and a natural inclination towards drawing has led him to a variety of avenues to explore himself and the world though art through illustration, sculpture, animation…
Sean is probably better defined by the amount of “commas” in his title rather than any one specific profession. One of his friends recently labelled him as an “image maker” – which holds a lot of truth. However Sean prefers to learn how to define it for himself before waving it around as his calling card.
Looking back on what he has worked on, he can say that the connecting thread is always people and our relationships. Sean is interested in communities and what defines our relationships to things, images and each other. While from the outside it seems that his work falls on drawing literal things, his goal is to represent the feelings and meaning of that person, object… He is always striving the represent the unknown with the know.
Reading is a big source of inspiration, his course has taught him to always seek out books first. Boredom is also a big part of his process and thinking. Sean likes working listening to music on his multiple projects. He is currently the Art Director for the ‘Take Shape’ magazine; which is about architecture and politics. He is also putting together a publication of his Weekly Still Life series with the help of Platform Editions as well as working with collaboration that will take the form of a publication published by Brooklyn based Risograph publisher TXTbooks and an exhibition in Tokyo.
