Visualising Science is a poster set composed of two parts (visualising immunology and visualising biology) by graphic designer Nancy Kouta. Every poster is inspired by images taken from a real virus analysed under a microscope. The project examines how we translate images into lines, shapes and forms and how can this help and inspire us in understanding our bodies and everything around us.
Currently based in Beirut, Nancy is interested in the magical imperfection of nature and space patterns. Visualising Science encompasses her characteristic style which blends abstract forms and organic geometric shapes with bold, vibrant colours. Inspired by paradoxes, Nancy’s visual explorations are a juxtaposition of real, yet surreal stories and allusions.
Although Nancy predominantly works in digital formats, she always begins her ideas with a pencil. “Seeing my ideas on paper can help me to imagine it in colour. Yet, I love traditional print making, especially Risograph since it adds some vintage textures into the illustration” explains the designer.
With the belief that “every little detail of our bodies is just as miraculous art”, Visualising Science is Nancy’s exploration of how visual shapes can play a big role in understanding the complex entity, which ultimately leads to a deeper understanding of ourselves. Nancy hopes to transform the poster project into a printed zine in the new year.
