Tess Smith-Roberts is an Illustrator and Printmaker based in London. She approaches her work with humour, bold shapes, and a playful use of colour. As well as editorial illustration, she is currently working on a graphic novel, Missed Connection, which has been shortlisted for the 2019 Hamburg Book Prize. Missed Connection explores the issue of loneliness within young people when they move to a new city, talking about it subtly to normalise the issue through a narrative. The light-hearted illustrations in bold colours contrast the bleakness of the topic and the narrative’s sensitivity, yet also make it more relatable and easier to talk about.
Tess’ practice has a strong foundation in printmaking, focusing on the techniques of Risograph and Silkscreen printing. Recently, she created a risograph printed animation of a banana, which was equally difficult and satisfying. She is currently in the process of setting up a risograph print studio with some friends, and is also co-founder and curator of Desk Jockey, a risograph printed zine by illustrators for illustrators, asking important questions like “What the fuck is illustration?” and “What the fuck am I doing?”.
