Taking inspiration from folklore and the natural world, Cally Conway creates intricate linocut prints. Myths and stories are often her starting point for a print, where she can indulge her obsession with fine detail.
Cally mainly creates limited edition prints which are hand carved in her home studio, and pulled on her own press. She recently created a range of linoprint fabric and wallpaper designs for the interior design company Cocoon Home; an ongoing collaboration for which she will continue to create new collections.
Whilst studying Fine Art at Kingston University, Cally discovered the print room and became fascinated with anything print based. After teaching Art for many years, she returned to printmaking and came upon linocutting, the only area of printmaking she hadn’t previously explored, and instantly became completely hooked on the process of carving a print.
She states: “I love the physicality of carving a linocut, and the craft of making an image that could be created far quicker using modern methods. I think it’s become my main way of working because it’s such an egalitarian process. It doesn’t involve the use of complicated equipment, and a linoprint can be made fairly cheaply with limited space.”
Influenced by a wide variety of artists; Cally has a real interest in craft. She admires the skill and ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as current printmakers such as Marthe Armitage who continue that tradition.
