When it came to creating her linocut Christmas cards this year, Haychley Webb of Stellabox Designs decided to make a lovely robin the star. She tells us; “I didn’t want the cards to be overly Christmassy, so designed a block that could be used in Springtime too – a robin on a garden spade”.
Haychley’s main focus for this design was creating lots of texture when carving the different areas of the robin’s feathers. After a few tries with traditional grey hessian-backed lino, she couldn’t quite get the textures she was looking to create – the lino was too crumbly. She describes; “I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Japanese Vinyl but I dug a block from deep in my studio drawers and began to carve, and it worked a treat. You can see from the images that I was able to carve very fine lines close together to create the feathers under his wings.”
The only test print from this block (shown with the extra chatter around the bird itself) is going to be hand-painted and framed and gifted to Haychley’s Grandmother for Christmas.
She scanned and had the design professionally printed to create the final greeting card. She comments; “It’s been lovely seeing how warmly folks have reacted to this design online and at fairs and events this Christmas. I think I shall continue my Japanese vinyl journey next year!”
The card is available individually or as a pack on Haychley’s website and Etsy.
