Steven Tran aka YOBOY is an illustrator, specialising in character art. Inspired by a mixture of Asian culture, graffiti art, surrealism and abstraction. His visual style heavily focuses on urban design, blending both youth culture and cartoons from the 1930’s. Having only just discovered printmaking during his second year at this university, he now combines the two aspects of digital art making and a more traditional way of creating images through roughing, inking and then screen-printing. This made the outcome feel less artificial and more authentic Tran tells us.
His interests have a very strange blend of things, Tran is very invested into games and film concept art but through my time at education, his new interests include how art can be drawn like Hokusai for example, and his very traditional way of making elegant prints by bringing life to his characters and scenes.
Currently, Tran is mainly focusing on self-initiated briefs through his last couple months of the year, creating 9 individual crane illustrations at very drastic design points. It was an accumulation of his inspirations that inspired him to create those 9 designs and to test his capabilities.
