Megan Pater is a photographer and printmaker located in the United States. She is a recent graduate, having received her MA in Studio Art in December 2021 from Morehead State University. Megan’s creative output primarily focuses on alternative process photography which she first discovered back in late 2019. She hasn’t stopped experimenting since, working with photopolymer gravure, and using her DSLR to photograph and Photoshop to edit.
Megan found photography at a time when she was at “rock bottom”; “I needed something to do and borrowed my parent’s DSLR to just try it out and see how I liked it. I saw it as an outlet to express my emotions. Nothing I had been involved with prior could really allow for me to do that in such a way.”
Currently, Megan is between projects as she has just presented her MA thesis exhibition. The concept of the exhibition, The Mind and the Land, calls back to the time when she first discovered photography, centring around mental health and how one can express that through landscape, and what these landscapes communicate to us.
This year, Megan is hoping to take more time to expand upon the ideals of what landscapes can communicate to us and how. However, she is also looking to briefly pause the project and try something new; “I am thinking of dabbling into a new photographic process and/or try to create some drypoint etchings for the first time”.
Megan has won awards locally and nationally for her printmaking and photography. She is a member of the Bluegrass Printmakers and a juried member of the California Society of Printmakers. Her works have been published in the 2020 edition MSU’s yearly student art journal, Inscape, as well as the 29th and 31st issues of the international publication The Hand Magazine.
