Kari McDonald, aka Lemuette, is a woodblock printmaker based in Rockford, IL USA, working out of her basement studio. She completed a BFA in Printmaking at Northern Illinois University in 2010, and has been focused on the art of block printing ever since. Kari’s prints depict the native prairie plants of the Northern Illinois area, as well as the critters and creatures that inhabit them.
Although she predominantly creates limited edition prints, Kari also enjoys producing block printed greeting cards that she prints until the block dries out (with shina plywood being her favourite and most reliable material). As well as this, she creates a range of printed goods including useful items such as journals, magnet sets, and gift tags.
Kari recently purchased a Provisional Press kit to aid the printing of her small woodblock prints; “I’ve loved how it has already made my process of printing easier and faster, and just more fun than rubbing with a spoon or pressing down with a hand press. This change has reduced strain on my wrists, elbows, and shoulders.”
Whist at college, she loved exploring the textures and details that intaglio etching provided. In 2021, Kari hopes to get back into this by experimenting with solar plates and purchasing a table top Takach Press that will further enhance her printmaking practice.
“My goal is to help bring bright but calming imagery inside” says Kari, and her prints certainly do that; bringing the stunning landscapes of prairie fields to those afar.
