London-based collage artist, printmaker, and graphic designer Charlotte Smith is the face behind Artwork by Blondie. Her digital collage prints present a surreal reality that incorporates juxtaposing found imagery of idyllic vintage photographs, often with dark or hyper-real surroundings, creating a paradox of paradise.
Charlotte has always been passionate about art and design, and has studied all areas of design, from fine art, to graphics, sculpture, and printed textiles. She has worked as a graphic designer in the hospitality and music industry for the last few years, constantly learning and developing her craft.
“I’ve always had a bit of an odd mind. My dreams are intensely surreal and my mind is in a constant battle between light and dark. I love rainbows, glitter, and sunshine, but am also deeply drawn to darkness whether it be deep in the abyss or a violent storm. Sci-fi, surrealism, fantasy, and nature continue to be my main sources of inspiration.“
Charlotte’s collages are places to escape in, telling immersive stories that allow viewers to get lost in whilst questioning reality. However, she wishes to not be solely defined as a collage artist; “I want to be perceived as more than that… A lot of time, thought and heart goes into my creations so every artwork I produce is essentially a piece of me“.
Music is also a huge inspiration for Charlotte’s work. Whilst studying at Brighton University she made flyers and EP covers for local nights and DJs in her spare time. From there, Charlotte fell into her digital collage style, and continued to create alternate realities to the sound of music. Six years later, she has since collaborated with the likes of Don Broco, Gabrielle Aplin, Walking On Cars, Casisdead, Calibre, and many more.
Currently predominantly using Photoshop and Illustrator to create her collage designs, moving forward, Charlotte wants to start combining more illustration, painting, and hand-drawn designs as she builds her brand.
