Karol Dybalski is a graphic designer based in Brampton, Canada. A graduate of Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology in Toronto, he joined Bruce Mau Design as an intern in 2014, and has since gone on to become a Senior Designer.
Swiss Coasters is a side project that Karol started 5 years ago. “I have always been intrigued by the practical, tactile, and timeless qualities of paper coasters” says the designer. He has been collecting coasters from restaurants and beer festivals for many years, and eventually started designing his own during his train commutes to and from work. Initially, these were just digital designs that Karol shared on social media. However, with lockdown in place, and working from home, Karol missed the hands on work that came from being in a design studio. Thus, he decided to learn how to screen print, and his Swiss Coasters project became the perfect source.
“The intent behind each coaster design is to distil the long histories and ornate design elements of beer and liquor brands into their simplest, minimalist forms” states Karol. He does this by using some of the influential principles of Swiss Design; free of ornamentation and relying solely on typography and geometric forms to communicate. Or, in Karol’s words; “A minimal take on maximal branding”.
These small, 4” coasters provide the perfect medium for simplification. Each coaster is individually hand-pulled in Karol’s basement studio. So far he has released two coasters packs based on local beer brands in Canada, with each pack consisting of 4 unique coasters.
