Visual artist Agnes Vokata first discovered the world of art when she was four years old. She tell us; “My mother took me to an elementary art school in the small town where I was born for some art classes for children. I never thought that one day art would be my life’s passion.”
It’s been a long journey from there to get to where she is as an artist today. Agnes began her artistic endeavours by experimenting with embroidery, textile design, and digital photography. Following these explorations, for many years she decided to concentrate more on analogue photography, which remains her favourite way of capturing art. Presently, she works mostly with different printing techniques, particularly Risograph and screen printing.
Agnes’ work is interested in the themes of family, memories, heritage, consequences, and how our history influences us. She states; “I am very grateful for all the experiences I have had because I am no longer afraid to use other expressive elements in photography and my artistic practice.” Whilst practicing art-making Agnes has also partaken in several internships, mostly in Germany, which have continued to influence her work. “Experimenting in life, moving and meeting new people/places is important to me and my work,” says the artist.
Agnes completed her bachelor’s degree in Documentary Photography in the Czech Republic (her home country), before moving to Sweden for two years where she has completed her master’s degree. She chose to study abroad with the hope and belief that learning about a new culture broadens artistic horizons, as well as knowledge of thinking and art itself.
Currently based in Prague and widening her practice and knowledge even further, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for this young experimental artist!
