Officially trained as a mathematician, two years ago Alexandros Fitsopoulos quit his full time job, leaving the city of Athens, and relocated to Tinos Island, a place that he truly loves and an inspirational environment to start his own business. During his studies in Mathematics, Alexandros partook in a series of online illustration courses, seminars, and workshops in the areas of drawing and history of art. He grabbed some pencils, brushes, acrylics, papers, and canvas, and his art journey began.
The self-taught artist started printmaking (linocuts, monotypes, and mixed media techniques) back in 2020. His inspiration comes from his surroundings and the environment and landscape of Tinos Island. Pigeon houses, geometries, Cycladic light that enters through the windows (the directions during the seasons and the geometries it creates) and Cycladic shapes and forms are all reflected in his works. Alexandros describes; “As a mathematician, and a guy who loves Geometry (since I can remember), in my work I try to keep the absolutely necessary, using subtraction”.
His first linocut artworks included a huge variety of designs and inspirations, including animals, trees, and landscapes in order to explore all the paths of engraving. However, today, Alexandros mostly deals with strict geometries and basic shapes, experimenting with different kind of papers and oil based inks using a printing press. He is looking forward to continuing to explore printmaking and showing his love for his new home, and is hoping to produce some works in a larger format very soon.
