The latest print release from ArtySwami, aka Daisy HP, is a tribute to her family’s tenure as cornershop Bossmen(and women).
Daisy’s grandparents came to England 50 years ago this year, and have worked in many places, but a lot of her family are known to have worked in the Cornershops of Colchester, Essex. A large number of Colchester locals will likely have met her grandparents and wider family in those 50 years. She states; “I have a huge respect for my family, working in times where racism made running a business like a cornershop a dangerous profession at times.”
“Indian-owned cornershops give me a big nostalgic comfort, it brings me back to being a toddler in my grandparent’s shop in Ongar. They have a charm and warmness that brings me joy when I go into them. The smell of incense or the audio of a Bollywood soap opera behind the counter makes me think of family, and I think, for a lot of people, their local Cornershop does become like home for them too, their subtle unique features that you don’t get in any other Cornershops are the little spices of life.”
Cornershop Royalty is a tribute to this, and evokes Daisy’s sense of nostalgia. The 2 layer reduction Lino print features images of cornershops once owned and ran by her family, and is printed on Indian Lokta paper.
