Soar and Belong are the latest screen print releases from Caroline Tomlinson, a London-based illustrator and artist. These pieces have been created in order for her to experiment with loosening up her process, and dropping the restraints and tightness that is often placed upon a creative when working on commercial projects.
Caroline states; “As important as the energy is in terms of my mark making in my work, I still haven’t been totally successful in truly retaining a looseness to my commercial pieces. Apparently this is common among creatives, we can tighten up both in terms of style and process when working on commissions. For me its a confidence, being free and feeling its ok to wobble, dribble and make a mess when working. But I still become more restricted in my movements and marks when theres a client at the end of the job.”
This is why it has been so essential for her to challenge her status quo, and why she is loving carving out time specifically for her own print making. For these two larger screen prints, Soar and Belong, the larger scale and the greater freedom has been something Caroline has relished. “The looseness both visually and emotionally is not only refreshing but, as always, its feeding into my illustration work jobs too,” says the illustrator.Caroline is still exploring her ‘belonging’ theme that has formed the basis of her recent print series, but at the same time she is looking to create positive messaging. She comments; “This feels as though it matches the uplifting energy I feel not only when I make the piece, but also during the printing process and the reveal”.
