One of London-based artist Caroline Tomlinson’s goals for 2023 was to focus on developing a body of editioned screen prints that focused on the notion of ‘Belonging’. Her commercial illustration work had kept her so busy that it felt all the more essential to set a little time aside each month to work on this theme, and develop her printing practice.
Caroline set herself the goal of releasing an edition for each month of 2023 – and achieved it! She also aimed to create pieces that enabled her to work more freely, using a looser graphic line. She tells us; “This felt important for a couple of reasons. One, it was my own practise and I wanted to enjoy not being quite so literal in my representations. And two, to use a looser mark making process felt important for a theme that explored the notion of being free and seeking where one truly belongs. I felt the need to be organic and light in its energy.”
The last piece in the collection, Together – Flying High, is, for Caroline, the best example of capturing this sense of lightness and joyfulness. And with it being the last of the 12 prints from this year, she has also made it the largest piece, at B2 in size. This allowed Caroline to take over the floor of her studio to create the original artwork and let it completely flow.
