Artist, educator, and printmaker Charlotte Tyne creates enchanting linocuts from her home studio in Torquay, Devon. Her work is inspired by her love of the outdoors, walking, and her connection to her hometown, a place which she describes as “of strage dichotomies, of beautiful views and ugly lives, of palm trees and deprivation”. Many of her prints are based on places that hold a high importance to her; be that places of contemplation or those that hold memories of childhood right through to adulthood. Her prints offer moments of calm in the chaos of everyday life.
Charlotte left school with a handful of GCSE’s, one A level, and a son! She tells us; “A lot of people thought I had ruined my life, but I was determined to prove them wrong”. Thus, she went on to complete a Degree in Fine Art in 2006 at the University of Plymouth, and from there spent a number of years working in youth work. In 2011, Charlotte completed a PGCE, and spent a couple of years teaching in secondary schools. Today, she works as a Trainer Facilitator/Art Technician in her local HE college, where she predominantly teaches in the ceramic and 3D Areas.
Lino printing was something Charlotte had enjoyed at school, but had only dabbled in here and there. It wasn’t until she was demonstrating the reduction technique to a group of students, that something sparked in her. She states; “I just love the process, the repetition, the carving and printing, and watching the image emerge through layers of colour.”
Charlotte has created a small home studio set up to create her prints, working alongside her dog/studio assistant Ziggy. She also has access to the workshops and beautiful press at her work. For printing, her preferred materials are Schminke water-based inks and Somerset satin paper which can hold the many layers of ink she uses to produce her prints.
Looking forwards, Charlotte hopes to run a lino print course for adults through her work next year, as well as start running workshops and courses independently. She aims to further spread the word about her work by selling at markets which sit well with her own way of working and ethos.
