“My work in printmaking helps me connect real to imagined memories, and my life experiences to my heritage” says Dana Harris Seeger, a printmaker and educator based in San Jose, California. Growing up as a second generation Baltic American, Dana has always tried to connect the artefacts she has acquired from Estonia and Latvia into her own story. Feeling drawn to a world that is in her blood but not in her memory is what motivates Dana to create layered works in lithography, screen printing, collage, and monotype. “I am constantly trying to lift the veil between 2 worlds- however that manifests for me- as an identical twin, as the mother of twins, and as the granddaughter of displaced people.”
Currently, Dana is working on a series of prints and paintings that involve layering conductive ink onto a surface to enable an interactive viewer experience. These interactions trigger projected and video imagery that relate to her personal history. She states; “In this way, I am inviting my audience to not only take part in my journey, but to create their own interpretation of the work- bringing their experiences and histories into play”.
“The layers of paper, ink, paint and imagery are my way of overlapping my memories with real events, facts with fiction, past with present, and my story with my heritage” explains the artist. As an educator as well as an artist, Dana uses the language of art, and specifically printmaking, to not only share her story, but to teach others how to tell theirs and continue the holistic pursuit of learning.
Dana has won various awards for her work, has been recognised as a “Woman to Watch” by KQED, named the 2020 Santa Clara County, California Artist Laureate, and has pieces in collections all across the United States. In order to extend her goal of advancing art education she also co-created an artist incubator and art school in San Jose, California, called the School of Visual Philosophy.
