Elyse DeLisle’s Darién print series consists of hand carved linoleum prints based on time she spent in the Darién region of Central America. The Darién Jungle is one of the most biodiverse swaths of forest on the planet, spanning 2,240 square miles of land connecting Central and South America – between Panama and Colombia. Extremely remote, some portions of the jungle are 7 hours, by boat, to the nearest road.
This past year saw the largest number of refugees crossing through the Darién, by foot, seeking asylum in North America. Many leaving their homes to seek political asylum, economic opportunity, and as climate refugees. The three linoleum prints from the series were created utilising aspects of Elyse’s sketchbook entries, film photography, and conversations with the indigenous Guna communities living in the region. The pieces explore and confront ideas surrounding community, resilience, and rebirth.
An opening reception was held for the series at Hello Again Books in Cocoa Village, Florida on July 29th, 2023. The event included an artist talk, live printmaking demonstrations, and a Q&A with Florida immigrant Coalition.
20% of sales from this print are given to the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Florida Immigrant Coalition provides resources and support for immigrant families in the State of Florida. They are led by their membership, including grassroots and community organisations, farmworkers, youth, advocates, lawyers, union members, and more. Working together for the fair treatment of all people, including immigrants.
