Emily Woolford’s artworks incorporate a range of printmaking techniques including letterpress and linocut in order to illustrate Gothic, abstract and literary influences.
Her printmaking journey began whilst she was studying a Fine Art foundation degree at the University of Derby. Initially experimenting with drypoint etching, Emily later fell in love with the process of lino printing. However, thanks to university tutors and technicians, she was then introduced to letterpress printing, which commonly features in her work. “I felt that letterpress was perfect for my art because my ideas come from quotes and stories from books” explains the artist. The idea that books wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Gutenberg and the printing process really excites Emily, further enhancing her appreciation for print.
“Printer and author Virginia Woolf once said that she looked at a printmaking display like ‘a hungry child gazing at buns’, and that is exactly how I feel” describes Emily. Her work usually begins on the printing press or mini etching press at her University. Emily then works on a Farley press for letterpress and embossing, using both wood and lead type. She also has her own Adana 8×5 and mini etching press in her home studio.
Emily’s work can be characterised by her use of minimalist abstract imagery which she juxtaposes with relevant and carefully chosen extracts of text. Often sticking to a monochrome palette with only one other colour, Emily highlights her love for Gothic themes and classic horror.
She is keen to continue to expand her journey through the medium of print, and looks forward to seeing how her art will grow through the process of experimentation.
