French relief printmaker Florence Jalice recently experienced the thrill of two exciting new milestones in her practice as an artist: her first solo exhibition and her first time being a jury member on a judging panel. Both of these monumental events were due to the Miniprint International of Cadaqués. The exhibition, which takes place at Taller Galeria Fort in Cadaqués in Catalunya (Spain) has been running for 44 years, and is described as “the most popular and longest running exhibition of miniprints in the world”. The ADOGI, the non profit association which runs the annual printmaking competition, offers each winner the opportunity to present a week long solo exhibition during the next event. Last year, Florence took part in the 43rd Miniprint Cadaques with her print, Connection, which was inspired by the Iroise Bridge in Brittany, France. The piece was chosen as one of the six winners, and thus Florence’s first solo exhibition was born. This year, she presented 30 of her original linocut prints in an area of the gallery dedicated to the solo showcases.
During the winter 2023 – 2024 Florence worked on creating a new collection for the event. Titled Contemplations iodée, the series shares her vision of the beautiful seascapes of Brittany in France, and comprises a series of colourful linocut mini prints that are reinterpretations of sketches she has been making on location since 2020. The works are characteristic of her style, conveying the sense of awe she experiences when immersed in nature. The whole collection was printed on plate size 10 x 10 cm, and paper size 18 x 18 cm. Some are multi-plates prints (usually four plates), and other are a combination of multi plates, puzzle, and reduction prints. The process of creating this new series taught Florence a lot of things; mainly that she was able to work under pressure and meet a deadline.
As part of this year’s Miniprint International of Cadaqués The ADOGI association also invited Florence to be a member of the jury for the running competition. In 2024, 672 printmakers from 44 countries took part in the exhibition. With approximately 2700 prints to look through, judging presented a big challenge for Florence! She states; “…The jurying process was quite long and exciting. It took me about 5 sessions of two hours to look with wonder and kindness at all the prints on the walls and browse the folders.” Florence also learnt a lot along the way; “…printmaking is diverse, and so were the styles, techniques and inspirations represented.”
Her time spent at Miniprint International of Cadaqués 2024 was mind-opening; discovering new printmakers, styles, and lots of inspiration!
