La conquête de l’espace (The conquest of space) is the core of graphic designer and artist Florian Tripoteau’s artistic practice. The project addresses the idea of visual pollution and the conquest of public space by private companies and advertisements.
Florian has always been fascinated by the stars, the idea of the future and the imagery that is associated with it. “But actually, beyond the stars and shiny rockets, there is much more. Something more down to earth” he states. For Florian, this is happening here on earth via advertisements and visual pollution on our streets on bus stops, buildings, subways and more. “Thousands of people are using #adblock online, but what about our cities, our public space?” questions the artist. But how far will this conquest of space go? Some companies are even talking about putting adverts in the sky and on the moon. “That’s why, over-using space related things in my designs or collecting space stuff is a way for me to question the subject, to say: I am aware of this conquest” explains Florian.
The project also took inspiration from science fiction and dystopian movies, ambient and techno music, and old books and scientific documents Florian finds in flea markets. He also had the chance to collaborate for one year with an Astrophysics laboratory located in Marseille. Florian spent most of his time in their library, digging, reading and scanning tons of pages in order to build his own library of inspiration including typography, diagrams, photographs and illustrations.
With a background in graphic arts and printed media, Florian developed a strong sensitivity and interest in the triviality of advertising devices such as posters and billboards. A large part of his practice consists of surveying urban spaces in order to capture images, taking photographs of signs, and locating elements that he can use as raw material. Between photography and collage, Florian has used and manipulated images and signs through his La conquête de l’espace project to interrogate the presence of graphic injunctions in our everyday environment. By emptying these billboards of their contents, the artist has reopened a “public” space.
