Francis Chouquet, better known as Fran6 on social media, is a visual artist specialising in lettering and printmaking. His creative path so far has led him through the fields of web and graphic design, however he quickly came to specialise in typography. In 2015, Francis quit his graphic design job to focus on lettering. His love for mid-century type developed quickly, and this is when he started considering printing. “Old modern posters were screen printed, with approximate overlaps or textures and this is that type of craft work I wanted to do,” says the printmaker.
Thus, Francis purchased all of the equipment for a screen print setup, and started printing his own work. The combination of the printing method and his designs was perfect. Later on, he acquired two Risograph copiers, and lastly a letterpress. This diversity allowed Francis to create a variety of type-based work, and take a step back from the digital world and into the analogue one.
Through a process of experimentation, he also started to paint again, using canvases and handmade stencils to create more artworks. Today, Francis navigates between these areas: screen printing mostly, and using varied techniques like letterpress, collage or paper cut for a more artistic activity.
Wanting to give his work a more unique feeling, Francis slowly moved from a commercial art lettering to self expression. He tells us; “I try to not do client work anymore except when someone wants to showcase my style”. As a huge advocate for outdoor activities, he often works with outdoors brands for whom he creates designs around nature and mental health, and always in his signature style.
Looking to the future, Francis hopes to further push the boundaries of his artistic side, using lettering to express himself and share feelings or emotions around nature and mental health. His first art exhibition is planned for the end of 2024, with the hope of more to follow.
