Grannyprints is the pseudonym of Matt, a printmaker living, working, and creating on Gadigal Land in Sydney, Australia. Matt’s practice predominantly focuses on the creation of relief prints, and is slowly expanding into the world of intaglio and monoprinting. For Matt, the process of producing the print is often the most important part, as through the meditative process of creating he finds harmony. He states; “When I started, I was so focused on falling in love with the process of printmaking I would talk more freely about what the process did for me, rather than the result.” He continues; “In a way, my work is still about that, Printmaking (or creating in general) has been an amazing tool for me to work through my own mental health struggles. Whilst the result may not be reflective of my headspace, the peace I’ve gotten from committing to the practice is forever tied to it.”

With a day job that is incredibly different to his life as a printmaker (Matt works as a social worker with marginalised communities), and an education background in sociology and social work, Matt has minimal formal training in the field of printmaking. Thus, he has learnt mainly through trial-and-error, by “pestering other printmakers”, and getting full on nerdy about print by scouring Instagram and watching others make work.

Currently, Matt is working through a commission, and is about to start producing some test prints for a solo show he’s got coming up next year. His process usually begins by finding a few references from which he’ll create sketches before transferring to the block. However, for his upcoming show, Matt has been working on more trials with colours, experimenting with multi-block reduction prints to figure out his method before committing to a large plate.

In 2025 Matt is looking forward to getting on with “more printing, purchasing more tools, and biting off more than I can chew!” He concludes; “I had a busy 2023, felt exhausted after my first solo exhibition in 2024, and now I’ve got the buzz again, it’s time to get back to it.”
