John Livingston works to shape and form creatures that reveal his own collective experience and subconsciousness. Currently the chair of Visual Arts and Head of the Printmaking Dept. at Anderson High School, he creates silkscreen prints in his free time.
“When considering the most meaningful way to be fulfilled in this lifetime… I decided to become a teacher,” says the printmaker. He revels in working creatively alongside his students, fostering and nurturing inspiration and sharing the love of printmaking with the next generation.
John works authentically, entirely from his own imagination, designing silkscreen prints from his drawings. These original drawings are never preplanned, but instead emanate from feeling and personal experience. However, he does look to the likes of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Ralph Stedman, Charles Addams, and Robert Crumb for inspiration. The drawings are then dropped into Procreate on an i-pad and elaborated upon digitally until they are ready to turn into prints.
His collection of silkscreen prints ranges from fun, free, and whimsy to guttural, solemn, and morose, mimicking the artist’s mind in symbolic metaphor. One of the best responses to his work to date? “Boy, you’ve got some bugs in your head!”.
