Austrian-born and Cape Town-based graphic designer Julia Schimautz’s latest works are an exploration of optical illusion and animation through the medium of Riso printing.

Julia is currently part of the team at Riso studio Dream Press, where her work is guided by her love for “the beauty in imperfection and misregistration of print”. Her practice currently combines Riso printing with animation; “The beauty in combining print and animation is the uncertainty of the outcome”. Julia continues; “Though designing digitally, the imperfections and misregistrations of printing render a composition out of my control, more often than not producing something more interesting than I could imagine to create“.

Her works feature a touch of nostalgia, and Julia strives to allow her digital designs freedom in how they translate in different forms. She is driven by exploration and experimentation, using bold colours and new and distinct techniques. “I love delving into the moving possibilities of still images even just simply through playing with colour and the shifting of halftone angles,” says the designer.

Julia is self-taught in printmaking; a journey which began when she got involved in the music scene in Cape Town, designing and printing merch for local events and bands. She then extended this experimentation into her other work, wanting to have some fun with designing for herself. At Dream Press, Julia has found herself involved in the publishing side too. She concludes; “The wholesome involvement in each discipline of creating, printing and binding by hand falls in line with the direct, practical, and explorative possibilities that I love so much about this field”.
