Larna Mewett-Mayer, known as lunkeymarna, is a talented artist hailing from the vibrant city of Brighton. With a unique blend of screen printing and textiles, she fearlessly delves into the realm of women’s lived experiences, making a bold commentary through her artistic expressions. Larna’s educational journey is as impressive as her artistry, with two Bachelor’s degrees; Fine Art from the University of Chichester and Graphical Communication from the University of Brighton, alongside a Master’s degree in Cultural and Critical Theory, with a specialisation in Aesthetics.
From humble origins in Hastings, Larna faced a period of homelessness, finding solace in a young person’s homelessness outreach project. It was during this trying time that her talent shone through, as her artwork was showcased at Tate Modern as part of a group exhibition. This opportunity became a pivotal moment, serving as a portfolio for her subsequent college and university applications.
Drawing strength and inspiration from her personal experiences, Larna has infused her practice with a resounding voice for the unheard. Through her art, she endeavours to foster understanding and connection among individuals, effectively conveying her unique perspective.
One of her notable series, Bad Guys, empowers individuals to stand their ground against sexual predators, particularly those shielded by the art establishment. In her craftivism packs, Larna encourages people to make a powerful statement by piercing book covers and canvas portraits she has meticulously printed. A significant portion of the proceeds from these packs is dedicated to supporting charitable organisations that aid victims of such crimes.
Larna’s artistic vision extends beyond the boundaries of a single medium or style. She fervently embraces the fusion of different artistic elements, evident in her captivating body of work. The seamless integration of graphic design into her fine art practice adds depth and complexity to her creations. In her mesmerising Lost series, Larna captures images from her travels, immersing herself in remote locations. These prints, rendered in a 4-colour CMYK process, convey a wistful and dreamlike depiction of her journeys. Through her art, she highlights the solace found in travel, where one can truly discover oneself—sometimes only upon returning home.
