Matías Eiras is a graphic designer and artist based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Specialising in type and branding design, he has 8 years of experience in the industry, and was educated at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. Beyond his professional projects, Matías crafts artistic posters, playing with halftone techniques and floral elements.
While specialising in branding, posters, and type design, Matías doesn’t confine himself to a specific niche, and is open to a spectrum of projects where he feels that he can make an idea grow. He recently found an interesting place for his work on clothing design, where he participated on creating jerseys for The Heavy Pedal and Cobra Arcade bar.
Matías has a degree in Graphic Design from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and started his professional career mixing studios and agencies. He then took the leap and went freelance where he started on his own journey.
His design process is initialised in an analogue way, and he takes a long time working on his ideas, which he believes is the most important part of the design process. Matías then goes trough several quick sketches in pencil before going to the computer. There’s also a lot of combination of analogue and digital within his artworks; Matías likes to play around with paper, textures, and paint which will then be edited in Photoshop and used in Illustrator. He comments; “Great stuff comes from mistakes or errors! My advice for other designer/artists is ‘do, do & do’; it doesn’t matter if it’s not working, the best place to find inspiration and answers to communicate an idea is working.”
He also enjoys the process of experimentation, and stretching, pixelating, and deforming shapes is part of his style. He states; “It is important to have fun with design and play around, it is not always about a business… I think that part of the success is doing what you enjoy instead of trying to reach goals.”
Matías’ MEDG Poster project started as something fun to occupy his free time, but during the Covid-19 pandemic it became bigger than he could imagine. Today, Matías tries to keep doing a poster a week as part of a self-initiated project and as a different approach of his Graphic Design career.
As a result of his MEDG project Matías has been able to collaborate with designers that he admires and be part of galleries and exhibitions exposing his work. He was also invited by Universidad Argentina De la Empresa in Buenos Aire to give a talk which he titled Doing Something from Nothing.
As a big fan of old books, magazines, and retro-futurism, Matías takes a lot of inspiration from their halftone design. His work is also influence by the likes of David Carson and Stefan Sagmeister, who he greatly admires. He constantly shares his ideas with his peers and contemporary designers to gain feedback: “I believe that an extra pair of eyes can make an idea way better”.
Looking to the future, Matías hopes to continue learning, start working with 3D, and take part in workshops outside Argentina to learn from different cultures.
