Max Gordon is an illustrator, designer, doodler, and screen printer based out of Philadelphia. He designs t-shirts, logos, gig posters, and illustrations that explore childhood and art school influences. Experimenting with screen printing techniques and playing with colour, line, and texture (over and over again) allows Max to create both happy accidents and purposeful marks that result in fun imagery. Inspiration for his work covers a wide range of sources including Robert Crumb, Dr. Seuss, off registration, happy accidents, German Expressionism, billiards, and skateboarding.

While attending art school, Max had the opportunity to be an intern at a screen printing shop in Philadelphia, but had “no clue what screen printing was other than the big thing that makes shirts”. It was here that he fell in love with process and the art of gig posters. He then worked at the shop and went on to another internship which turned into a full time job at a design firm in Center City Philly. Here he learned a lot, but mostly that the office life was not for him. After three years, he went back to freelance and screen printing for clients.

Today, Max focuses more on his own art and design and makes a point to draw every single day, no matter what – his favourite being the mindless morning doodles and the delirious late night sessions. Almost every design or piece of his art starts as a tiny thumbnail for composition purposes, probably with a marker or conte pencil. Concepts, if any, come later. He tells us; “I like to focus more on line, colour and composition”. Once a thumbnail is selected, he takes a quick snap and then heads into Procreate on his iPad where he adds colour and textures. “Half tones are my favourite and have been a staple in my work for a while now,” says the printmaker.

Lately, Max has been drawing and designing a lot for himself. He tells us; “I’m taking this year to work on paintings and drawings but mostly focusing on art markets and designing and printing for my Billiard apparel brand Livin’ Good Ball Club.” Looking to the future he hopes to keep creating fun, unique, unpretentious art, and “never have a boss”.
