Recently, screen print artist Meg Hopkin decided that it was time to upgrade her studio space. With her work developing and getting larger in scale, the shed she was working from at home was no longer big enough. “I needed a space where I could spread out and just make a mess” says Meg. After viewing many different studios around her area, she came across the perfect one in a lovely Suffolk village, Barrow, near to her home.
“My studio is located in and around fields and nature therefore it is a peaceful and calming place to work. I love it, being in autumn the colours around the fields are amazing and they really inspire the colour choices in my work. The views from my studio windows are amazing, just miles and miles of fields I really do love it.”
Meg’s studio has two separate rooms; one for printing, and another for packing prints. Having her own space now allows Meg to print whenever she wants. As a student, it was also really important for Meg to have a space to further develop and push her work outside of her studies. “I often spend all day in the studio and time just flies, I get so into printing that I don’t even think about time. It could be 11pm and I’ve been printing since 9am and I won’t even realise, when you’re in the zone you just don’t want to stop what you’re doing. I feel so fortunate to be doing something which I really love” describes the printmaker.
Having recently started to work on bigger pieces that she now has the space to do, Meg hopes to expand her practice and start printing onto big pieces of fabric from which she can make a variety of products. She states; “There is something so lovely about handmade homewares. I have more than one table to print from now which I means I can have more than one screen on the go at once, it is so much easier and more efficient“.
“I’m only 20 and I’m still a student so I feel very fortunate to have my own studio space, I space where I can just be creative and a space where I can just forget about my worries and just have fun. I think in life you have to take risks to see what works, so getting a new studio was a risk that I felt was worth taking and so far, so good. I couldn’t be happier.”
There are still many things that Meg wishes to add to the studio in the future, but together they will continue to grow. She is hoping to get her own exposure unit for her screens, as she currently does this through her university. In the future Meg would also love to offer workshops from the space, sharing her love for printing with more people. She concludes; “But overall, my new studio was the best move for me. My best advise it to take risks, embrace mistakes and have fun“.
