Shapes by Sal is Sally-Mae Hudson, a self-taught printmaker who discovered the art form 4 years ago. Living in the beautiful Lake Hāwea, New Zealand, Sally-Mae has a huge appreciation for the great outdoors, and the natural environment underpins the majority of her work.

`
It is through her own experiences with the outdoors that her artwork is shaped; “What I see and feel around me when exploring, forms the ideas and themes for my pieces”. Sally-Mae’s process of creation is led by the complementary nature of the two pursuits; her artwork inspires and encourages new experiences in the outdoors, and these experiences form the basis of further pieces. “My work is as much about inspiring others to protect, explore, and appreciate the natural world, as it is my own artistic expression,” says the printmaker.

Sally-Mae finished her bachelor’s degree in Sustainability and Outdoor Education in 2017, and for the past 4 years she has worked part-time in the environmental/conservation sector. She states; “My art and my passion for the outdoors are so intertwined that without one, I couldn’t do the other”.
