Sophie Fields, a screen printer, maker and textile designer based in Edinburgh worked Front of House for Capital Theatres until the lockdown of 2020. In October of last year the theatre put out a ‘call for submissions’ to come up with an idea to fill the festival theatre’s facade as a way to say thank you to everyone who had donated money to their emergency Crowdfunder page to help save the theatre from closure.
Sophie’s submission was the chosen idea, and was made up of a series of fabric hangings containing all comments left on the Crowdfunder page. The title, Hanging by a million threads, is quite literal, as the fabric is made up of millions and millions of individual threads woven together providing a strong tensile form. “As well as all the support the theatre has been awarded, during the first lockdown it seemed like theatres were hanging by a single thread, but now they are hanging by many” says Sophie.
Each curtain is made up of stripes of colour and features some of the beautiful messages, thoughts and memories from the hundreds shared by the public during the campaign. Other messages from the 525 submitted will be displayed on digital screens on the ground floor of the theatre, so people walking past can read the messages clearly.
