Stefania Patrikiou lives and works in Thessaloniki, Greece. After her attendance in the first year in UDK, Berlin, Germany, she was accepted to Aristoteles School of Fine Arts, Visual and Applied Arts where she graduated from in 2020 from the Printmaking Department. She has also received MA of Arts, Art in Public Space of Aristoteles School of Fine Arts, Visual and Applied Arts, in 2023.
Stefania has participated since 2013, in various exhibitions, biennials, and art contests in Greece and worldwide, related to Printmaking, Ex-Libris, and Artist Books. She is constantly seeking alternative non-toxic printmaking techniques, such as silkscreen printing, and is currently experimenting with alternative photographic processes, such as cyanotype, pinhole photography, and solargraphy. Stefania is also member of The Greek Printmakers Association and organises creative workshops related to printmaking and alternative photographic processes.
Through her work, Stefania explores ways to highlight and repurpose abandoned industrial spaces. Memory and time are her main interests, and at the same time she experiments with the boundaries of printmaking, specifically silkscreen printing. The starting point for her works is nearly always a photograph; which she first processes digitally, and then manually during the printing process. The form, composition, and final image of each piece emerge after printing a large number of monotypes. Often, Stefania combines silkscreen printing with other alternative forms of photography, such as cyanotype, aiming to expand the possibilities offered by these specific mediums.
For her series, Urban Landscapes, Stefania visited specific industrial sites in Greece that have been abandoned or closed due to the economic crisis the country experienced over the last decade. All of these spaces remain exposed and abandoned to this day, without receiving any new function, carrying all the memories of the people who lived and worked there. Thus, ideas for reuse and repurposing the spaces seem to be fit.
Urban Landcapes consists of various silkscreen monotype series. Every print is different, yet similar, much like a film frame. The prints are placed next to each other, creating a mosaic of images, aiming to capture both the passage of time and the endless possibilities of this particular technique. Stefania describes; “With monotype silkscreen printing, the artistic boundaries are constantly expanding, and the colour and form choices are endless”. The project highlights the issue of abandonment in public and private spaces, which succumb to the ravages of time.
Stefania concludes; “Although the project was initiated for the presentation of my ΒΑ thesis, the urban landscape continually offers new opportunities for creative processes. After all, it’s the world we are living in.”
