In the modern world where digital art is at the forefront, Plymouth-based printmaker Sue Lewry stands out from the crowd; celebrating traditional craftsmanship and artistic collaboration. Her creative journey so far has taken her from working as seasoned graphic designer to a passionate printmaker; a journey that has taught her a lot along the way. Today, she works from her studio in Alma Yard, creating high-quality, affordable print pieces alongside experiments with paper, textiles, woodwork, and installation.
With a background in the fast-paced fashion industry where she worked as an Art Director, Sue has slowly transitioned into the tactile realm of printmaking. For Sue, printmaking is not just about the final piece, but the whole process behind it. Thus, she embraces the rituals of the craft and every aspect of the process holds significance; from donning her ink-splattered apron to feeling the physical strain of a day’s printmaking labour.
Sue’s printmaking work also extends beyond the confines of her studio in Alma Yard. Through her mobile print workshop, Colossal, she brings the joy of printmaking to unexpected places, from skate parks to blustery British beaches. Working alongside communities and individuals, Sue sparks creativity within those who might never have considered themselves part of the contemporary art scene.
Aside from her community and commission work, she finds solace in solitary exploration. Inspired by the works of photomontage artists like Hannah Höch, Sue creates her own range of prints and crafts unique screen-printed paper puppets that explore the intricate relationship between art and identity and push the boundaries of her medium.
Currently, Sue is putting together a solo exhibition that will explore her screen printed paper puppets and the female form. She is looking forward to working on more bold and vibrant projects, expanding her reach, and bringing the joy of hands-on printmaking and creativity to all.
