Formplay is an animation studio focused on creating simple, characterful animations, inspired by play. It’s the sense of fun that has led to a range of intriguing projects for some of the world’s best-known commercial brands, from Wall St Journal to Atlantic Records.
The Brighton studio was founded in 2017 by directors Catharine Pitt and Mark Davis. “The balance between ‘FORM’ and ‘PLAY‘ is at the core of our approach to projects. Sometimes ‘play’ is a part of the development and research of a project – exploring styles and background influences, other times it’s simply capturing a playfulness in the work…” explains Catharine.
“Much of our work focuses on character design, where playful qualities help engage a viewer and communicate key messages in a memorable, human way.”

Most of the studio’s output focuses on 2d animation, often frame-by-frame, using TVPaint, Adobe Animate and After Effects, for a range of projects from music videos, explainer films and branded content for social media.
